Pre-lab Electricity Notes

 Basics of electricity

AC standard outlet: 110V (sin wave)

  • Energy measured as 60hz

DC batteries: 9v usually (constant)

Volts (V)

Current (amps / I )

Resistance (ohms / R )

V = IR

R = V/I

I = V/R

Using a breadboard

  • Wires or staples that connect through different holes to make electrical connections
  • Rows are already electrically connected, minus break in the middle
  • Plus is power, minus is ground

Flashlight circuit

  • LED on h14 and 16, resistor on j16 and the blue stripe, wire from i14 to power stripe
  • Then connect battery to + and - to complete the circuit

Schematics + Diagrams

  • Battery is 3 lines with + and - denoted
  • Resistor is jagged line with resistance labeled
  • LED is lines and a triangle

Components in the circuit

  • LED indicators
    • Larger piece of internal metal is negative side
    • Shorter leg is negative side
  • Resistor indicators
    • Gold stripe = 5%
    • First number, second number, number of zeros
    • 0 black, 1 brown, 2 red, 3 orange, 4 yellow, 5 green, 6 blue, 7 violet, 8 grey, 9 white

  ex:  10,000 = brown black orange

10 = brown black black
